Coffee is part of the routine in Italy. Spend a few days in Finale Ligure and you will start to notice the rhythm of the place. Mornings often begin in the old town with a quick espresso before heading into the mountains.

If you are planning a mountain biking trip to the Italian Riviera, here are some of the best coffee stops in Finale Ligure to visit before or after riding.

Bar Centrale

Located in the heart of Finalborgo, Bar Centrale is one of the classic meeting spots for locals and visitors alike. The café sits right in the main square, making it a perfect place to start the day before heading into the mountains.

Riders often stop here for a quick espresso while watching the town slowly wake up. The outdoor seating makes it an ideal place to plan the day's ride or meet friends before heading out to the trail heads.

Like many traditional Italian cafés, the focus here is on simple, high quality coffee served  at the bar or enjoyed outside in the square. It is also a great spot for gelato, although you will often have to queue. If you do, it will be worth it.

Caffeteria Dolce Amaro

If you are looking for something sweet alongside your coffee, Dolce Amaro is a great option. This small pastry shop is well known for its selection of cakes, pastries and baked goods.

After a long ride, many mountain bikers head here for a cappuccino and something sugary to refuel. The display counter is usually full of tempting options, from traditional Italian pastries to cakes and desserts.

It is an easy place to stop while walking through Finale Borgo and makes a great mid-morning coffee break.

Pasticceria Caffe Ferro

Pasticceria Caffe Ferro is another excellent bakery and coffee stop in Finale Ligure. Known for its traditional pastries and strong Italian coffee, it is a favourite among locals.

Stopping here before a ride is a good way to experience the local breakfast culture. Many riders grab a quick espresso and pastry before heading toward the mountains for the day.

The bakery atmosphere feels very authentic and offers a glimpse into everyday life in the town.

Oddone Bike Cafe

Located on the main street in Finale Ligure, Oddone Bike Cafe is more than just a coffee stop. It’s also a great choice for an aperitivo to enjoy after a ride.

The space combines a café with a bike shop, making it a practical place to stop during the day. You can grab a coffee or a drink while getting your bike checked or picking up a t-shirt or bits of kit.

It is a straightforward stop that fits easily into the day, whether you are heading out to ride or coming back into town.

La Bottega Cafe

La Bottega Cafe is one of our favourite spots for an aperitivo in Finalborgo. It is a newer spot run by a small local team.

It has a courtyard with a large orange tree set against the old town wall, which gives it a slightly quieter feel compared to the main square.

It is a good place to stop after a day of riding for a drink and something small to eat.

Gelateria Carlin

While best known for its gelato rather than coffee, Gelateria Carlin deserves a mention for riders looking for a post ride treat. Many visitors stop here after dinner or after a long day on the trails.

A scoop of gelato followed by a quick espresso is a classic Italian combination and a fitting reward after exploring the mountains around Finale Ligure.

La Gelateria Yogurt

La Gelateria Yogurt is in Varigotti, about 5 km from Finale Ligure, and it is well worth a stop if you are riding in the area.

It works well after a ride on trails like DH Men, with a quick stop by the sea before heading back.

Coffee in Italy

Coffee in Italy is usually quick and simple. Most people drink their coffee standing at the bar, rather than sitting down for long periods. It’s part of the daily rhythm, a short pause rather than something to linger over.

There are also a few unwritten rules. Ordering a cappuccino after lunch is almost borderline illegal, as it’s considered a morning drink. Once lunch is over, locals switch back to espresso, keeping it short, strong and to the point.

You will come across a few variations, but they all stay within that same simple approach. An espresso is the standard, a small and intense shot of coffee that’s usually finished in one or two sips. A ristretto is even shorter and stronger, while a lungo is slightly longer, with more water and a milder taste.

If you prefer something with milk, a cappuccino is the classic choice in the morning, made with espresso, steamed milk and a layer of foam. A caffè latte has more milk and is served in a larger cup, while a latte macchiato is mostly hot milk with a shot of espresso added. A macchiato, on the other hand, goes the other way around, being an espresso with just a small amount of milk.

For those looking for something a bit different, an Americano is an espresso diluted with hot water, closer to what many people think of as a regular black coffee. You might also come across a corretto, which is an espresso with a splash of liquor, often grappa, usually ordered later in the day.

Overall, coffee in Italy is not about endless options or customisation. It’s about doing the basics well, keeping things simple, and fitting naturally into the flow of the day.
