Tour du Mont Blanc by Mountain Bike or E-Bike: The Ultimate Alpine Adventure

Riding the Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the most iconic mountain bike trips in Europe.

It is not just about the trails. It is about moving through three countries, crossing high alpine cols and linking together some of the best terrain in the Alps. During the trip, you ride through France, Switzerland and Italy, with each day bringing a different landscape and riding style.

This is an adventure where everything comes together. It brings together big mountains, long descents, technical sections, epic singletracks and the feeling of covering real ground on the bike.

What Makes the Tour du Mont Blanc So Special

The Tour du Mont Blanc is not based in one location. It is a journey.

Each day you move on to a new place, riding from valley to valley and crossing high mountain passes along the way. One day you are riding above Chamonix, the next you are dropping into Italy, and then heading back across into France.

The riding reflects that variety. You will find technical alpine single track, rocky descents, flowing sections and long traverses that connect everything together.

It is this combination of terrain and progression that makes the trip stand out. You are not repeating trails. You are constantly moving forward.

What a Typical Tour Looks Like

Most trips run for five to seven nights, with four to six days of riding. You start in Chamonix, where you meet the team and prepare for the week ahead. Champex-Lac, the Great St Bernard Pass, Martigny  Aosta, Courmayeur and Beaufort.

The exact route can vary depending on the season and conditions, as well as to avoid the busiest hiking periods. This flexibility helps keep the riding flowing and makes the overall experience smoother.

Each day is different

Some days focus on long descents from high alpine terrain, starting high and dropping deep into the valley. Others include bigger climbs or traverses where you work your way across a mountain pass. There are also days where you mix in shuttles and lifts to access the best trails more efficiently.

By the end of the week, you have completed a full loop around Mont Blanc.

The Riding

The riding on the Tour du Mont Blanc is classic alpine terrain.

Expect rocky trails, roots, tight switchbacks and sections where you need to stay focused. Many descents are long and sustained, often dropping from high altitude down into the valley.

There are also sections where pushing the bike is part of the experience, especially when crossing higher cols. These moments are part of what makes the trip feel like a proper mountain journey. That said, the route can be adjusted depending on the group. Hike-a-bike sections can be reduced or removed, particularly for e-bike trips where weight becomes a factor.

For advanced riders, most trails are rideable. Intermediate riders can still enjoy the trip, with the option to adapt the pace and approach where needed.

Mountain Bike or E-Bike

The Tour du Mont Blanc works well on both a mountain bike and an e-bike, but the experience is slightly different.

On a standard mountain bike, the trip feels more physical. You earn more of the climbing and the pace is slightly slower, especially on longer days.

On an e-bike, you cover more ground and spend more time riding. Climbs become more manageable, which opens up more options during the day and reduces time spent in the van. This often allows the trip to be completed in four to five days, although a longer week still works well if you prefer a more relaxed pace and want to experience more places around the Mont Blanc.

Both options follow a similar route and structure. The choice depends on how you want to experience the trip.

Daily Flow of the Trip

The week follows a natural rhythm.

You start with an easier first day from Chamonix, building into longer and more demanding rides as the trip progresses. There are big alpine days, including high altitude traverses close to 3000 metres, mixed with more relaxed days focused on flow trails and local riding zones.

Stops along the way are part of the experience. You can have coffee in a mountain hut, gelato in Courmayeur and lunch in the mountains, before finishing the day with a proper meal in the valley.

Each evening you arrive at a new location, with your luggage transported by the van and ready for you at the next stop.

Accommodation and Support

Accommodation is a mix of hotels, guest houses and mountain huts.

The exact places vary depending on availability and season, but the focus is always on comfort and location. There is also the option to upgrade accommodation in some locations.

 Throughout the trip, you have:

  •  Local professional mountain bike guides leading each day
  • Small groups of up to 6 riders, keeping the experience personal
  • Van support and luggage transfers throughout the trip
  • Uplift shuttle service when needed
  • 5–7 nights of accommodation in hotels, guest houses or mountain huts
  • Breakfast each day, pluslunches in local restaurants or picinc style in the mountains and trail snacks on riding days
  • A LeRipp team member supporting you on the ground

This setup lets you focus on the riding while we handle everything else.

Who Is This Trip For

The Tour du Mont Blanc is best suited for  intermediate to advanced riders.

You should be comfortable on technical terrain, including rocks, roots and steep switchbacks. Some exposure is part of the riding, and confidence on longer descents is important. Intermediate riders can still take part, with the itinerary adjusted and flexibility within the group to match the level.

Fitness also plays a role. You will be riding for multiple days in a row, with climbs, descents and time spent at altitude.

That said, strong intermediate riders can still take part. The itinerary can be adjusted, and there is always flexibility within the group.

When to Go

The Tour du Mont Blanc runs from June to September.

This is when the high mountain trails are accessible and the weather is most stable. Conditions can still vary depending on altitude, but this period offers the best chance for a full loop. Personally we prefer either mid to end of June or in Spetember as that's when there are less people/hikerson teh trails in general.

Why Ride the Tour du Mont Blanc

There are many mountain bike trips in the Alps, but they rarely offer the same sense of journey.

This is not about riding one destination. It is about linking together multiple regions, crossing borders and experiencing the mountains from different perspectives. By the end of the trip, you have not just ridden great trails. You have completed a full tour around Mont Blanc.

It is this mix of riding, travel and progression that makes it one of the most memorable trips you can do on a mountain bike.
